Some shallow scratches in the clear coat can be improved or removed by polishing. A scratch that has removed color or reached the material beneath it needs a different repair. A photo alone may not show the depth clearly.

Find out which layer is damaged

A typical painted finish has more than one layer. A mark on its surface is different from a cut through the color. Polishing cannot put missing color back into a deep scratch.

3M’s scratch-removal guidance distinguishes surface clear-coat defects from deeper damage. That distinction matters more than how long the scratch is.

Avoid making the mark harder to assess

Do not start with heavy sanding or repeated aggressive rubbing to find out whether the scratch will disappear. Show the shop what the area looks like before applying a repair product, and mention anything you have already used.

For photos, use one wide view showing the panel and a close-up from more than one angle. Strong reflections can hide a scratch, so check the pictures before sending them.

Compare the expected result

Ask whether the proposed work will remove the scratch, reduce its visibility or refinish the area. Those are different outcomes. A touch-up may be appropriate for one goal while a panel refinish is needed for another.

If the paint is chipped, peeling or showing rust, include that in the conversation. Bring the car by so we can look at the finish and explain the options before you decide.
