Bring the car if it can be moved safely, any estimate you already have, and your claim number if you’re using insurance. Tell the shop what happened and what has changed since the damage occurred.
Start with the car and the damage
Have the year, make and model ready when you call. Mention which panels were hit and whether anything is loose, rubbing, leaking or no longer working. If a door is sticking or a warning light appeared after the accident, say so even if it seems unrelated to the dent.
Don’t force a damaged door or drive over just to get an estimate if you’re unsure the car is safe. Call first and explain the situation. Photos can help start the conversation.
Bring the paperwork you already have
If a claim is open, bring the claim number, insurer’s name and adjuster’s contact information. An insurer’s estimate or a previous shop estimate is useful too. You do not need to create a claim just to ask us about repair costs.
A written list of your concerns helps keep the visit focused. I-CAR’s vehicle check-in guidance explains why gathering accident and vehicle information at the start matters to the repair process.
Ask what the estimate includes
- Which parts are being repaired and which are being replaced?
- Does the estimate include paint and any required inspections?
- Could taking the car apart reveal more damage?
- When can the repair be scheduled?
Keep a copy of the estimate. If you’re comparing shops, compare the work listed as well as the total.
